Race report: 2012 Sporting Life 10K

Another weekend and another race! This weekend, it was the Sporting Life 10K (May 13, 2012). Now, I don’t normally do back to back races but this was one race that I thought was worth running because 100% of the race registration fees were being donated to Camp Oochigeas, a camp for kids with cancer.   Continue reading “Race report: 2012 Sporting Life 10K”

Banana Chocolate Chip Protein Pancakes

Most runners who complete a race take a banana at the finish and eat it then and there. Not me. No, I’m not hoarding bananas because that would just be wrong. I just don’t like the taste or texture of raw bananas. Too mushy and squishy for me. Yuck. So at the end of the Sporting Life 10K, I ended up with a banana and a bagel. The bagel was gone in about 4.95 seconds (I’m kidding) but that banana was headed off for bigger and better things. Like what? How about banana chocolate chip protein pancakes! Sounds good to me! Basic White Bread Loaves

You might be asking “Another recipe for white bread?” Didn’t you already make that? Yup. However, this one is different from the Classic Sandwich Bread recipe: it has slightly more proofing time and it uses compressed yeast. Well, what exactly is compressed yeast? Race report: 2012 Goodlife Fitness Toronto Half Marathon

Route for the 2012 Toronto Goodlife Half Marathon

This is my race report for the Goodlife Fitness Toronto Half Marathon on May 6, 2012. I’ll start off with the “executive summary” for those of you who get squirrely reading race reports. If you want to see pictures, you’ll have to scroll down.

Blueberry Cream Cookies

I love muffin tops! No, not the kind you get from wearing jeans fresh out of the dryer but the kind you might find in a bakery. You know, the ones that you eat. I don’t know what it is about a muffin top: maybe it’s that combination of the slight crispy-crunchiness yet soft cakey texture and the fact that you can break it into small bite sized pieces and not have it fall apart. Or maybe it’s just me. I like Oreo cookies but not so much the cream center. Shocking I know. So I was intrigued when I came across this recipe for Blueberry Cream Cookies. Creator Christina Tosi describes the cookie as being like the top to a blueberry muffin. Even though I hadn’t eaten this cookie on my last trip to Milk Bar, I have enjoyed her other recipes such as her bagel bombs and Compost Cookies so I definitely wanted to give them a try. Jalapeno and Avocado Guacamole

Happy Cinco de Mayo! I have to admit that it’s not a widely celebrated day in Canada. So I don’t know too much about Cinco de Mayo except that it commemorates the victory of a Mexican army against invading French forces. A bit of a David versus Goliath story.  In any case, I never turn down the opportunity to celebrate especially with food and especially if it involves guacamole! Gear Review – Lolë Sprint Skort

A gift card that’s about to expire… An upcoming half marathon… What to do? I’m going to go and get a new running outfit! Now I know running a race isn’t a competition about who looks the cutest but I’m coming back from a tweaked IT band/knee pain problem so I’m not going to be the fastest runner out there but I can at least try to be the cutest. When I first started running, skirts were some what of a novelty item but now that running has become more mainstream, it seems that everyone and their grandma likes running skirts. And so many companies are in on the action – I found skirts made by Nike, New Balance, Under Armor and even The North Face to name a few. Then I came across an unfamiliar name, Lolë.

Sundried Tomato and Goat Cheese Quiche

Here’s another recipe for those of you looking for brunch ideas for Mother’s Day. Remember the bagel bombs from a few days ago? Here’s something else you can add to your brunch menu, a quiche with sundried tomatoes and goat’s cheese. You’ve got eggs, cheese and cream mixed together and surrounded by a warm pie crust. It’s a slice of heaven! I don’t think you can go wrong. The best part? It’s easier than you think but looks and tastes like something that requires a lot of work. You’re guaranteed compliments all around!

Bagel Bombs and Brunch Ideas

I came across this recipe for bagel bombs while researching savory alternatives for a Mother’s Day brunch. Crowds of people at restaurants… waiting forever for a table… forgotten reservations… more crowds? Forget it! We’re staying in because nothing beats a home cooked brunch. More time to spend with each other and no elbow to elbow seating with strangers. The recipe comes from Adam over at Amateur Gourmet  but can also be found in the Momofuku Milk Bar book. I’m sure many of you are familiar with Christina Tosi and her wonderful creations such as Compost cookies and Blueberry Cream cookies. So what exactly is a bagel bomb? A review – Oreo’s Birthday Cake Cookies

Happy belated birthday to the Oreo cookie! Who knew that little cookie has been around for 100 years? Well I didn’t. At least not until I spotted a bag of birthday cake flavored Oreos in my grocery store. I normally don’t buy Oreos because I’d end up eating the entire bag in one sitting. But the golden bag with the picture of the Oreo and it’s cream filled center decorated with sprinkles just caught my eye. And I thought I’d be stupid not to, so I bought a bag.
