Race Report – Toronto Pearson Runway Run 5K (2012)

The Toronto Pearson Runway Run 5K was held this morning on June 23, 2012. I was going to ask how often do you get to run at the airport, but I think I know the answer to that question. The best part about this race is that you’re not carrying a 20 pound suitcase trying to make it to your gate on time: you’re out on the tarmac and planes are landing and taking off as you run. How cool is that? The money raised from the race goes to a great charity –  Hope Air which helps financially disadvantaged Canadians make travel arrangements for specialized health care. Fearless Fridays – Hot Weather Running Tips

The weather has been hot, sticky and humid for the last few days. That’s great if you can sit poolside or on your deck with a lemonade in hand, but what if running is part of your daily routine? You might be wondering how you can run in this weather. Here are a few of my tips for running in the heat.

I’m on Foodgawker

On Father’s Day I was taking a few pictures for my blog but not feeling particularly inspired. I was also feeling a bit down for having missed a long run because of some ankle problems. At the same time, my mom was giving me a hard time for not making Father’s Day plans. Can’t you see I’m busy blogging woman?! Truth was, my dad had plans to go golfing but he wasn’t feeling well Sunday so he cancelled his game. I made him a cake and we made him dinner, so all was well in the end. But I still felt a little blah in general and about the photos too.  Continue reading “I’m on Foodgawker”

Fearless Friday – The Running Snob

When I first started running, I joined a supportive running group called WISH, so naturally I assumed everyone else who ran was just as supportive. Enter the running snob. A few weeks ago, I was talking to someone about the Sporting Life 10K and I happily revealed that I ran a personal best in that race. The unexpected response was that this 10K didn’t count because it was on a downhill course! I had to pause for a second because I was stunned. Now, I wasn’t expecting a pat on the head, but I wasn’t expecting to be dismissed either.

When I called this person on it, he replied that he was only referring to himself and I was too sensitive. Uh-huh. He also complained about having to run a race with teens wearing high top kicks and basketball shorts. Really? This individual is a fast runner, but by no means an elite. Long Run Cake

I just started watching the second season of ‘The Walking Dead,’ and is it just me, or are the zombies now faster and smarter? The thing I don’t get about zombies is how they run so fast as undead when they probably weren’t runners when they were alive. I know, details. Personally, I don’t run very far on an empty stomach so I need to fuel up before heading out the door for a run.

Fearless Friday – 10 Tips For New Runners

One of my awesome readers asked me recently if I had tips for someone who’s just starting to run. Do I?! Running is a great form of exercise that lets you get outside and is a great confidence builder. But like anything else, there are a few things you should know before you start out. Here’s my own list of tips for new runners.  I wish I knew some of these when I started out a few years ago.

Fearless Fridays: No bus for you

Not In Service

Wednesday afternoon I left work early for a dentist appointment 4:00PM, but I didn’t get home until 6:00PM! I missed my appointment and was angry that I left work early for nothing. The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) is not “The better way”. Later that night, I complained to my chiropractor Marco that since I ran the Sporting Life 10K in 56:09, I should have just run home from work. We laughed, but little did I know I’d have to put my money where my mouth was, because today I chased a bus down for half a mile. Yes, that’s right: I ran for half a mile in my work clothes while carrying my purse and all of the crap I usually drag home with me at the end of the day. Fortunately I had my running shoes with me. God bless Asics! Here’s what happened: Continue reading “Fearless Fridays: No bus for you”

Race report: 2012 Sporting Life 10K

Another weekend and another race! This weekend, it was the Sporting Life 10K (May 13, 2012). Now, I don’t normally do back to back races but this was one race that I thought was worth running because 100% of the race registration fees were being donated to Camp Oochigeas, a camp for kids with cancer.   Continue reading “Race report: 2012 Sporting Life 10K”

Banana Chocolate Chip Protein Pancakes

Most runners who complete a race take a banana at the finish and eat it then and there. Not me. No, I’m not hoarding bananas because that would just be wrong. I just don’t like the taste or texture of raw bananas. Too mushy and squishy for me. Yuck. So at the end of the Sporting Life 10K, I ended up with a banana and a bagel. The bagel was gone in about 4.95 seconds (I’m kidding) but that banana was headed off for bigger and better things. Like what? How about banana chocolate chip protein pancakes! Sounds good to me!
